Mathematics
Topic:
Geometry
Grade Level:
1st grade
CA Standard:
1.G reason with shapes and their attributes. 1. Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles, are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to process defining attributes.
Objectives:
TSW recognize shapes e.g., triangles, squares, rectangles, circles and ovals.
TSW practice drawing triangles, squares, rectangles, circles and ovals.
TSW classify shapes based on their attributes.
Literature:
The Audacious Little Princesses
Materials:
Thinking Cloud handout
Classifying Shapes handout
Drawing Shapes handout
Shapes handout
Scissors and Glue
The Audacious Little Princesses
Lesson Presentation:
Sit students on the carpet around the teacher and read  The Audacious Little Princesses. Discuss the book making sure the to point out various places where shapes are found throughout the story. Next hand out the thinking cloud handout and ask students to raise it in the air if they want to answer. Ask the following questions:
1. Why is it important to recognize shapes?
2. When will you need to use shapes in real life?
3. Where have you seen shapes somewhere else?
Teach the class the defining properties of various shapes. Explain what makes a triangle, a square, a rectangle, a circle, an oval by using concrete shapes to demonstrate. Engage students in a discussion about the various shapes being taught.
Activities:
Day 1: Hand out the shapes and classifying shapes page and have the students cut the shapes out. Next the students glue the shapes in the correct category. monitor students to make sure they are gluing correctly.
Day 2: Hand out the drawing shapes handout. Review the defining properties of shapes. Ask students that need to draw shapes for each of the categories. Students work independently. Monitor and check for understanding. Extra support for struggling students can be performed in a small group setting and working with them to comprehend the material.
Assessment:
Work on this concept until mastery is shown by at least 80% of the class before assessing. Student will be tested on recognition of shapes as well as being able to draw shapes with defining attributes.
